Chicago "Club" Recap
It's been awhile since I last posted, but I haven't been playing much. I've stopped going to club ever since it moved to a senior center way up on the north side. There's general dissatisfaction about the new venue amongst the younger generation of Chicago scrabblers, so we've started meeting every few weeks for what's become my de facto club sessions. On Saturday, Tom, Erica, Andrew, Brett, Jeremy, Jeremy's second cousin David, and I met at our old club venue to play some games. These games are a lot of fun as people don't take it too seriously, and there's a lot of joking and discussion during the games but no outright kibitzing.

Despite a few bad mistakes, I had a great day going 6-1 +718 while averaging a fun 455.7 points a game. I really did a great job of outdrawing and out-phoneying my opponents. I should have gone 7-0 but inexplicably didn't challnge KET* after holding it for 4 minutes and knowing it needed to come off for me to have a chance.  At least I won't be fooled by it again.  I felt kind of bad for Brett who seemed to be wading through some horrible racks in our games.  But he's been kicking my butt on Scrabulous, so he probably deserves it.

I've enjoyed playing through other games people have linked to from Livejournal. So if anyone wants to see my games and the in-depth analysis of a career 1300 player (OK, it's mostly Quackle's analysis. I just parrot it), here they are:

vs. Brett
W 503-362

vs. Erica
L 442-433

vs. Andrew

W 456 - 376

vs. David

W 384 - 273

vs. Jeremy
W 480 - 343

vs. Brett again

W 491 - 353

vs. Brett yet again
W 443 - 325

I use FANGY PAX to remember the back hooks to KE*. I think of two wolves hugging (PAX: A ceremonial embrace to signify christian love and unity). I guess two vampires might be even better.

Thanks, that's a good one. After envisioning that hug, I'm sure to remember the mnemonic.

[Looking at the JC game, TORR PLAY]: Quackle actually likes this play. I ran ~19000 iterations of a 4 ply sim of the top 50 suggestions and this finished second to 15K DOOR which seems way to risky given that no Ss or ?s have been played.

You might want to stick to two plies on most non-endgame sim moves; it's the Quackle default. If you go past this, you're just adding noise to the sim.

Nice playing, thanks for sharing the games.

The more plies you use, the more accurate an assessment you'll get. I think this is especially true on such an open board. There's definitely more noise, but I think the 19000 iterations that ran over night should be more than enough to compensate.

It'd be nice if Quackle gave some assessment of the variance in rank order of the top m (3, 5, 10?) potential plays over the last n (1000, 2000, 5000?) iterations so you could tell if enough iterations have been run for the results to "converge".

I guess there's still a question about how much you trust the plays that are being used in the sim, but since no one is going to be setting up or closing lanes at this point in the game (at least after TORR), the valuation based plays are likely pretty good.
